Women network differently than men, study says, and its not a good thing

Women network differently than men, study says, and its not a good thingWomen network differently than men, study says, and its not a good thingThe old boys club is way more powerful than the Lean In group you organized in your town, especially when it comes to hard results like career advances like pay raises and promotions. Womens networks are typically less effective than mens in terms of what they get out of them, studies have shown.A new study published in the journal Human Relations sought to find out exactly was.The study interviewed 37 high-profile women in major German corporations. They found that not only do women build their networks differently than men, but they use them differently as well.Womens networks are more social, with closer relationships, while mens are larger and more transactional, with looser ties. But its how they use them or more importantly, fail to that was the main discovery.Lean in, but also lila drink onIn what the study called personal hesitation , the women studied were less likely to actually leverage their networks. They felt hesitant in asking for support and felt moral concerns about using their network, especially if they felt that they couldnt return the favor equally. They also often under-valued their professional worth in the network.I approach people without the expectation that I want something from that person, but with the intention to get to know that person, said one interviewee.Women also tend to build networks with other women who are either at their saatkorn level of hierarchy or below it this limits their access to top-level people in their organization who could pass on knowledge or provide mentorship opportunities.Difficulty gaining entranceMany networks often male-dominated are informal, meaning women have less of a chance of gaining entrance in the first place. (Unless they want to take up golf). There is also the fact that people want to socialize with people who are like them, hence the popularity of the old boys club.Women also have unique circumstances outside work they have less time to socialize their way into networking opportunities, since networking events typically take place evenings or weekends, usually because they have the added responsibility of caring for children that men do not have, according to the study. In fact, the mere anticipation of work-family conflict caused some women to opt out of networking events.I dont have such networks. If you are that busy with your job and have two children and a husband to boot, you have your hands full, said one interviewee. Its possible that women simply dont see networks the same way men do perhaps they experience them more like support groups, instead of a way to leapfrog ahead in their careers.Regardless partially due to gender bias beyond their control, but partially due to their own hesitation and undervaluing they are missing out on the real concrete gains made in male professional networks.

How to Know Your Impostor Syndromes Out of Control - The Muse

How to Know Your Impostor Syndromes Out of Control - The MuseHow to Know Your Impostor Syndromes Out of Control When it comes to confidence, I am the quintessential example of someone who feels wholly unqualified to do his job. Some people close to me have said that its a good way to keep myself humble. But trust me, there are times when the feeling of being an impostor has completely derailed me at work. Based on my very real experience, here are a few signs that your impostor syndrome has crossed the line from being something you should be aware of- and something thats keeping you from being a functioning member of society.1. Youre Not Getting Any Work DoneIts easy to wallow in self-pity and assume that youre just a little too dumb to be doing the job youre doing. But, when your work is simply not getting done, its unfair to blame this on the fact that you dont feel qualified to do the job. Of course, I can relate to the feeling that at any moment, youre going to get found out and your anfhrer is going to ask you to never show your face again. But if thats causing you to miss important deadlines and let your teammates down, thats a completely different story. How to DealSomeone much smarter than me once told me that a bad first attempt is way better than no attempt at all. So when your impostor syndrome has you afraid to take a pass at an important project, just remember- lots of feedback on something you worked on is a much better place for you and anyone else involved to start with. And chances are, that first attempt will be way better than you think itll be.2. You Assume Every Conversation With Your Boss Will Involve Firing YouHey, I get it. Its really tough when you start hearing whispers about your job- especially when those rumblings are based on rumors youve made up yourself. But unless you fear your boss because shes told you that youre one mistake away from the unemployment line, theres nothing productive that can come from waiting around for your ma nager to walk over to your desk and fire you. Not only is it based on absolutely no truth, it can put you in the type of mindset that makes it impossible to do your job well or even improve where you need to improve. How to DealIf youre really this nervous about your job status, find some time to talk to your boss about whats going on. Assuming you have a good (enough) relationship with your manger, its as easy as saying, Im wondering if you have any feedback about my recent performance. Even if you dont like what you hear, at least youll have a clearer idea of what you need to improve. But if you cant get a meeting the second you need one, be honest with yourself. What can you learn to get better at your job? If youre proactive about improving, trust me- youll worry much less about getting the boot, and much mora about understanding how you can grow your skills.3. You Start Frantically Looking for New JobsWhen youre feeling like you cant do your job, its only natural to say, Hey, I should probably find something new before they tell me that Im an embarrassment and ask me to leave. But again, this is a great way to distract yourself from the fact that not only can you improve at your work- but that youre also pretty qualified to do what youve been hired to do anyway. And when you panic and start looking for something youre more equipped to do, chances are youll just end up finding something that doesnt make you feel any more secure. How to DealIf this is you, ask yourself whether youre searching for a new job because you really want to find something new- or if youre doing it to avoid being fired. If you really hate what youre doing, then go for it.But if youre enjoying your work and are just trying to avoid getting the boot, you should probably take my advice from above, have that chat with your boss, and get that necessary confidence boost that youre not in danger of becoming unemployed. No really, I spoke to my boss about my insecurities (and wrote about it here) and it was a gamechanger.Theres a lot to be said about dealing with the feeling that youre just not good enough. But at much as I can relate, there are times when you need to take a good look in the mirror. How much are you getting in your own way? As someone who deals with it on a daily basis, take it from me- there are plenty of things youre taking the wrong way, and there are ways you can combat them before it gets completely out of control.

ASME Foundation Awards Scholarships to 38 Student Members ASME Foundation Awards Scholarships to 38 Student Members ASME Foundation Awards Scholarships to 38 Student MembersJamie NagodeFor the last 15 years, the ASME Scholarship Program has awarded graduate and undergraduate level scholarships to aspiring young engineers as they pursue their degrees. This year, 38 ASME student members will receive nearly $150,000 in scholarships through the program, which is funded by the ASME Foundation. The scholarship committee received a record number of applications for the 2014-2015 school year. More than 600 completed applications were submitted - a 50 percent increase over the number submitted last year. This impressive spike can be attributed to a new angeschlossen scholarship application tool that was added to ASME.org this year. The new tool not only simplified the process of filling out the application, it also added a new review portal that made it possible for scholarship committee memb ers to review applications more efficiently.ASME student member Jamie Nagode, a senior at the University of Hartford in Connecticut, was selected this years winner of the Kenneth Andrew Roe Scholarship. The $13,000 grant is the largest single-year scholarship ASME offers. The Roe Scholarship, which is awarded to juniors and seniors studying mechanical engineering, was established in 1991 in memory of the former ASME president and chairman of the ASME Foundation. Alexander BlumIn the letter accepting her scholarship, Nagode conveyed her thrill and astonishment at learning that she had been chosen. It is such an honor to have this type of recognition from a society of, in my opinion, the highest prestige, she wrote. This scholarship assures my commitment to the profession of mechanical engineering.Nagode, who hopes to one day work on an ASME standards committee, is an active member in her schools student section where she works to promote awareness of the opportunities that the Soci ety offers to undergraduate students. I aim to encourage the undergraduates in our chapter to explore mechanical engineering and find motivation in the practice that resonates within them on a personal level, she added.Another student member, Alexander Blum, was named the 2014-2015 ASME Foundation Scholar. This grant, which launched last year, provides scholarships of $11,000 to undergraduate sophomores, juniors and seniors. The scholarships can be renewed up to three years. Nanette PhilipBlum, who is a junior at the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and chair of the universitys student section, said the scholarship would allow him to keep his academic career on track. These funds will allow me to focus on school and my student section, maintain my academic standing, and graduate on time, wrote Blum, who co-founded the student section at Piedmont Community College, which he attended before transferring to UNCC. As someone who has always had to work while attending school, this has so much value to me.ASME student member Nanette Philip has been selected to receive the ASME Foundation Hanley Scholarship. The $2,500 scholarship, which was established in 2007 by the Mary Hanley Trust, is awarded to students pursuing an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering, with preference given to applicants demonstrating financial need.Philip, who is originally from the island nation St. Lucia, is a senior at Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. As an international student, she said her prospects for finding part-time employment to supplement her student loan were limited to on-campus jobs, which were few in number and much in demand. She saw obtaining a scholarship as the only other option for completing her undergraduate studies, she said. The financial assistance you have provided will aid with educational expenses and it will allow me to devote more of my time to my studies, she wrote in her acceptance letter. Your generosity has allowed me to b e one step closer to my goal and has further inspired me to continue to help others by giving back to the community. I hope one day I will be able to help other students achieve their goals just as you have helped me in fulfilling mine. Not all of this years scholarship winners are enrolled in traditional universities. The winner of this years William J. and Marijane E. Adams Jr. Scholarship, for instance, is Andrew Florek, a community college student from San Francisco. The $3,000 Adams scholarship is awarded to an ASME student member attending a college or university in California, Hawaii or Nevada, who demonstrates a special interest in product development and design. Andrew FlorekFlorek, who is currently attending the two-year City College of San Francisco, plans to transfer to a university to pursue a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering after he finishes the current school year. Since the City College of San Francisco does not have an ASME student section, Florek attend s activities held by the University of California, Berkeley student section as a way to meet and network with other ASME student members. They have been very kind to include me even though Im not a student there, he said. I will continue to go to events and participate in interesting webinars this year, but I am really looking forward to attending a university that has an ASME chapter on campus.Florek is also enthusiastic about serving his community, spending time volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, the Berkeley Project community service organization, and various charitable activities organized by his schools Alpha Gamma Sigma chapter. These types of philanthropic activities, and in particular ASME volunteer work, are often deciding factors in selecting scholarship recipients, according to Beth Lefever, education programs administrator at ASME. She added that the scholarship committee would like to encourage more community college students like Florek to apply for ASME scholarsh ips. The application period for the 2015-2016 scholarship year opens Dec. 1 and applications will be accepted through March 1, 2015. Counting On It

Counting On It Counting On It Counting On It When it comes to health, it is critical to know as soon as possible if there are changes to certain conditions. Insulin levels, for instance, can be checked quickly and at home. Knowing a white blood cell count, however, which can be vital for illnesses such as leukemia, isnt as easy, says Wendian Shi, CEO of CytoChip, Inc. There is also the problem of the cost and time which might come with going to a hospital when you want the measurement to be done, adds Shi. His goal of solving this problem has involved others in a push for an inexpensive, portable system for measuring white blood cell counts. The idea for developing the system began with Shis graduate thesis at Caltech. And, early on, astronauts actually came to mind. There was the thinking that astronauts can have their white blood cells looked at in terms of radiation while in space, he says. The thought was to get a white blood cell count not just before leaving and after coming back, but to get it possibly many times during the trip and do it in real time. Similar to a glucose monitor used at home, the system uses a test strip, but in this case, adds a microfluidic. The user puts a blood sample in the strip and inserts the test strip into the system and it rips out a white cell count automatically, he says, A dye puts light on the cell which allows the count to take place. Early work used three dyes, including FITC, but the dye used now isnt being revealed. The strip uses plastic with some reagent, while earlier work used silicon before the change to plastic. Part of the work of developing when it comes to a reagent was not just counting white blood cells but also different subtypes, he says. It can count all five subtypes of white blood cells, he says, which include monocytes and neutrophils. Challenges included the microfluidics built into a system and optical alignment. Its taken patience from the graduate thesis to keep it moving forward, he says. Its one thing to have an original plan, its another to keep building on it. Currently, Shi estimates the system will cost $100 to purchase and that each strip will cost $5. Right now a white blood cell count can take a day or more for the test results, he says. When youre taking intense chemotherapy, white blood cells can go low and it can be life threatening. Consider outpatient chemo that now exists and gives people the comfort of going home. They should feel more comfortable doing that and knowing they can have their white blood cell count if they need it. Eric Butterman is an independent writer.Consider outpatient chemo that now exists and gives people the comfort of going home. They should feel more comfortable doing that.Wendian Shi, CEO, CytoChip, Inc.

A Very Chinese Career Goal

A Very Chinese Career Goal A Very Chinese Career Goal Duty and desire to repay parents? When was the last time you heard that in a job interview, a casual conversation or anywhere else, for that matter? In my experience, such virtually universal filial gratitude has been unique (even though I can cite numerous examples of intense family devotion in the many Asian countries I have visited or lived in, including Japan, and some here in the West). Cultural Factors: Generational Contrasts, Confucian Piety and The Rectification of Names Among the reasons for that career goal and extreme loyalty and gratitude to parents are Stark lifestyle contrasts between parent and child: Many of those struggling parents (like those in these home photos taken by one university scholarship student, Miya, whom I came to know) did and do have to get up at 3 a.m. and leave their simple cottages, in all weather, to wearily cart and sell vegetables by the side of some road, hoping to cobble together enough of an income to clothe and educate their children. When not on the road, those parents are in the fields or in their Spartan, often no more than two-room house (plus hearth), doing what must be done and making do with what little they have, which may include a lot of plain porridge and rice, but rarely fresh meat or vegetables. The average rural Chinese family income?  $200 per month, for a lifestyle that, in very many instances, still lacks indoor toilets, any bath, central heating, real roads, private space or a real stove- not to mention any car, HDTV screen, take-out pizza, Apple computers or summers at poolside for the kids or anyone else in the family. A CHINESE UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT'S MOM, THRESHING GRAIN Gratitude of children toward parents is far likelier when it is so painfully and movingly obvious that the child- like so many of the Chinese students whom I got to know- is enjoying a faraway urban university lifestyle that her countryside parents can only dream of, and then only for their children. Ironically and in contrast, because so many baby-boomer Western parents have enjoyed home-owning and vacationing lifestyles that their two-job, student-loan burdened, underemployed graduate offspring can now only dream of, many modern kids and job seekers may feel that there are fewer, if any, parental sacrifices to acknowledge and repay. This suggests that instead of complaining that some modern kid or employee in the West is an ingrate for not making parental payback a high priority, we take comfort in knowing that at least many more of their parents were able to raise them without the kinds of crushing sacrifices that Chinese peasant parents have had to make. (Cynics will take their comfort in the view that all “parental investment”, however burdensome, is undertaken with some payoff expected- in the form of grandchildren or retirement care. But, let’s not go there, here.) Confucian emphasis on filial duty, rather than on rights: It may be argued that one reason China has been accused of lagging in recognition and enforcement of human and other rights is that its Confucian culture has traditionally emphasized duty over rights, in particular, the duty of children toward parents and the duty of the individual to his or her family.   What counts, in that scheme of things, are an individual’s duties, not his or her rights.- a view that makes sense in a traditionally purely agrarian society characterized by close-knit family farming. This emphasis on duties does, on the positive side of the ethical and cultural ledger, have one edifying aspect: In many interactions, the Chinese- like the Japanese- are more likely to get and exchange what they want by packaging interactions with others as exercises in obligations, rather than as an exercise of rights. For example, consider how we, here at home in the West, get what we want: I have a CD that you really like; you have one that I’d like to have. So, we trade in a simple deal between friends. My giving you my CD entitles me to yours, in what we agree is a fair exchange. Now shift the deal to the Far East: the same two CDs, but this time, because “harmony”, “duty” and “sacrifice” are highly valued, a Chinese or Japanese is far more likely to offer to give you the CD. The second party, having the same code of behavior and feelings, will also offer to give his or hers as a no-strings gift.. Materially, both the Western and Far Eastern deal-makers have gotten what they wanted: someone else’s CD. Psychologically, however, the two deals couldn’t be more different: The Westerner has, through an exercise of his or her rights, namely, entitlement to something in a fair exchange, gotten what was wanted and owed.   The Asian, through fulfillment of his or her duty, as an obligation to consider the wants and needs of others, got what (s)he wanted, by giving demanded only by conscience, not by the contractual, enforceable expectations of the other party. The Asian gets a bonus with the CD: the warm feeling that someone has chosen to give something because it was the right and caring thing to do, not because it was expected as contractual fulfillment and exercise of self-asserted rights, with sanctions for non-compliance. When duties (such as the obligation to refrain from smoking), rather than rights (such as the right to demand that someone stop smoking) drive interactions, both parties are left with something to feel good about: I did my duty and feel good about that; you admire and respect me for it. Nothing remotely like that happens when we Westerners merely assert, defend and exercise our rights as exercises in self-interest. The “Rectification of Names”: Reinforcing this Confucian devotion to parents is a second Confucian doctrine: “the rectification of names” (“??”- “zheng ming”). This second pillar of Confucianism is the belief that, for the purpose of social and cosmic order, we must act in conformity to and live up to our names, titles and labels. A daughter or son who does not revere and honor his or her parents fails to live up to the expectations of the family name or the designation “daughter” or “son”. Hence, it should not be so surprising that Chinese children more readily and gladly acknowledge a duty to repay their parents than their Western counterparts. Failure to do so means failing to live up to one’s name and label- which makes the child a living contradiction. Try suggesting to your kids that they have obligations to do housework, finish homework or to make repaying you a high priority merely in virtue of being sons and daughters who are called “son” or “daughter”. GRATITUDE BEGINS HERE As a tool of moral, political and social control and guidance, the rectification of names is brilliant and akin to getting people to do what you want by telling them they are the kind of people who would do precisely that- as R.D. Laing, the U.K. psychiatrist, pointed out. If you want someone to work hard, don’t beg or threaten- just tell him he is such a hardworking employee and that you appreciate that very much. Just tell your son that he is your son, who, as such, will do all that is expected. In the workplace, comparable labels will accomplish the rest and eliminate the middleman (you) by getting the title or label, e.g., “employee” (which properly connotes “hardworking” and “diligent”), to exact compliance. Perhaps the closest Western approximation to the Chinese concept of the rectification of names in connection with “filial piety” is the Mafias code of family honor.   Interestingly, in both the Mafia and Chinese culture, family piety is closely linked to something else: corruption. The Price of Piety Like everything else, such gratitude toward parents or your Mafia family as a form of filial piety comes at a price. Let’s say that such a sense of filial duty is largely a “good thing” and a personal and cultural strength. On the negative side of the ledger, however, is the consideration that the same Confucianism that undergirds such Chinese family devotion and respect of elders, like Mafia family devotion, has its dark aspect. In his insightful and enduring 1922 book, The Problem of China (free PDF), the British philosopher, mathematical logician, pacifist and Nobel Laureate Bertrand Russell suggested what that dark side has been. He argued that extreme devotion to family in China, a nation and culture he otherwise greatly admired, has fueled political and business corruption (as a means of ensuring the family’s well being and as a consequence of duty to it above all else). How can bribery and cheating others be bad when it is for the good of the familySicilian or Chinese? (By contrast, Russell, lamenting the carnage of WW I and presciently fearful of the coming of WW II, maintained that the Western counterpart to family values has been patriotism, with the homicide of battle between nations filling in for corruption within one.) Such family-inspired proclivity to corruption does teach us a lesson: It proves that sometimes not only do good intentions (to, above all, take care of one’s family, including one’s parents or extended family) have bad consequences (shafting everybody else, when necessary), but also that among these consequences are bad intentions (to shaft everybody else, when necessary). Here in the West, even if many kids, corrupt or not, are not sufficiently grateful to their parents to make repaying them their highest priority, these kids may still be grateful for one thing… …that their parents have been affluent enough to afford their childrens college educations and buy distractions from their kids ingratitude. ________________ (Note: All family and home photos were provided by   “Miya”, devoted daughter and very bright Chinese university scholarship student, who never saw a train until she took one to go to her university to begin her freshman year. The old family home shown in the photo, was, with government assistance, replaced in 2011 with a brand-new, huge and much more modern brick one.)

Job Search Strategy

Job Search Strategy Job Search Strategy This quote offers a good job search strategy for professionals. If you are looking for a job, it is important to be proactive and have a job search strategy when applying for jobs. But, its equally important to be thoughtful about what jobs you apply to and how you are applying.   For example, ask yourself:   if you have 3 hours for your job search today, is it better to apply to 50 jobs quickly, or is it better to apply to 10 jobs with more individual preparation like research and unique cover letter?   If its not obvious, definitely the latter!   That extra bit of thought and research will show a potential employer what kind of employee you will be, and therefore make yourself stand out from the masses. Here are some more helpful articles for people looking for telecommuting jobs: Too good to be true! Curveball Interview Questions How to Handle Them Like a Pro

Curveball Interview Questions How to Handle Them Like a Pro Curveball Interview Questions How to Handle Them Like a Pro When you come prepared to dazzle an interviewer with your response to “Why do you think you’d be a good fit at our company?” only to be hit with “Why are manhole covers round?” (an actual question asked at Google), you may be taken aback. But instead of panicking or demanding to know what the heck manhole covers have to do with applying to be an administrative assistant, take a breath. Curveball interview questions do have purpose, and you can handle them like a pro with these actions. How to handle curveball interview questions with ease: Relax- and remember why theyre asking this question. “Many times, the interviewer is trying to assess the way a candidate handles pressure,” says  Vicky Oliver, author of  301 Smart Answers to Tough Interview Questions. “Unfortunately, due to the ancient part of our brains that reacts to stress, we have a fight or flight reaction.” Your first task, therefore, is to remain calm. It’s OK to pause or make a statement such as “Let me take a minute to think about that interesting question.” Maintaining composure is a sure-fire way to score points. Think. Keep in mind that the employer usually isnt looking for the  right  answer (sometimes, there is no right answer to these types of questions) and instead they simply want to hear you talk through your thought process. So, its okay (actually, its encouraged!) to think out loud. For instance: “How many roses were sold on Valentine’s Day in Vermont last year?” The interviewer probably wants to test your reasoning skills, so talk through how you might arrive at an answer (such as estimating the population of Vermont, figuring out a reasonable percentage of how many of them might have bought flowers, multiplying by 12 since roses are usually sold by the dozen, etc.). “If Crayola named a new crayon in your honor, what color would it be and why? Let your creativity shine! This interview question also allows the interviewer insight into your personality. “How would you teach a five-year-old to make and serve pancakes?” This question displays your ability to break down a complex process into chunks that others can understand. It also tests thoroughness of seeing things through from start to finish- from gathering batter ingredients to putting the final product on a plate. Prepare. The problem with unusual interview questions is that, well, they’re not typical. You have no way of knowing what might be thrown at you. However, just like sports teams do drills to become better able to handle whatever happens during an actual competition, candidates can up their game through practice. The Internet contains a variety of crazy questions people have been asked. As you read them, think of how you would respond if put to the test! Know someone looking for a job? Examples of Bildungsromans, Coming-of-Age Novels

Examples of Bildungsromans, Coming-of-Age Novels Examples of Bildungsromans, Coming-of-Age Novels If youre a writer, then chances are youve  read some classic novels in your time. If so, without knowing it, youve  read a bildungsroman. A bildungsroman is a novel that traces the development of a character from childhood to adulthood, through a quest for identity that leads him or her to maturity. The term bildungsroman comes from the German for formation novel, or education novel and most often focuses on the trials and misfortunes  that affect the  characters growth. Typically (but not always) a character in a bildungsroman feels alienated and alone but ends on a positive note with the  character feeling a sense of self-realization. While youre probably not familiar with the term  bildungsroman, you are familiar with the term coming-of-age novel which is used interchangeably with  bildungsroman. Although literature is filled with many examples of a bildungsroman two prime examples to look at include,  David Copperfield written by Charles Dickens in 1850 and Jane Eyre written by Charlotte Bronte in 184. Lets look at both and see how the characters develop  over time.    David Copperfield The story follows the life of David Copperfield from childhood to maturity. David is born in England, six months after the death of this father. His mother re-marries when David is seven, and soon afterward  David is sent to a boarding school run by a ruthless headmaster Mr. Crakle. David suffers at the hands of Mr. Crakle and decides to run away and goes to live with a kind great-aunt who pities David and ultimately raises him. She also sends him to a better boarding school in Dover where he meets  Ages, the daughter of a landlord David happens to be renting a room from. David manages to complete  school, become a proctor, learns shorthand, joins a newspaper and ultimately finds fame and fortune as an author, writing fiction. He also finds true happiness when his unhappy marriage ends when his (young) bride dies, and David seeks out (and marries) Agnes, his true love. Jane Eyre Jane Eyre is not only of the first  female bildungsroman novels; it is one of the finest and earliest examples of the  genre. This novel tells the story of an orphaned governess who earns the chance to be a great lady. Jane values equality, and personal dignity  above all other social advantages and her banter with leading men reveals her indomitable spirit behind one described in the beginning as so poor, obscure, plain, and little.

Stop trying to be famous and build a body of work instead

Stop trying to be famous and build a body of work instead Stop trying to be famous and build a body of work instead These days, it’s easy to be famous. There are more influencers on Instagram than there have ever been famous people in the history of humanity. And our culture just keeps intoxicating us with the allure of more attention, and that it’s an easy thing to chase. So, yeah. Fame is the easy part. The hard part is to consistently show up every day and do your work. To stay in your lane despite what your peers are doing. To remember that they aren’t your audience. It’s hard to do this day after day, week after week, year after year. It’s especially hard to do decade after decade.Seth Godin recently shared that he’s never had a viral hit.Can you believe that?!One of the Internet’s most influential marketers and longest-running bloggers has never had a huge viral sensation. Is that because he was just unlucky?I don’t think so. Seth hasn’t gone viral, because going viral is not what Seth is trying to do. He’s trying to connect with you and help you change things. And going vi ral can sometimes stand in the way of real impact. If you’re wanting more help with goal-setting, I highly recommend Michael Hyatt’s  5 Days to Your Best Year Ever. It’s a process I’ve been going thru these past few years and think it’s simply the best goal-setting program out there.One-hit wonders fade awayHow many one-hit wonders are still making music today? The answer: very few.In fact, I know some of these people. Living in Nashville, you start to bump into songwriters and musicians fairly regularly, some of which have experienced astronomical levels of fame at some point. One friend I have fits this really well. His band used to perform for stadiums of people. Now, they play small dive bars. And you know what? He’s happier than ever. For the past two decades, he’s made his living writing songs for other people. He’s written dozens of award-winning songs that have helped other people sell millions of copies. And he’s made a good living doing it.More than that, he l oves what he does. The big lesson for him was realizing the real reason he was doing his work was not for the fame, but for the thrill of making things. So when his famous band fell out of the spotlight, as is nearly inevitable for all of us, he got depressed. Really depressed. Then one day, another musician called him up and asked for his help in writing a song. He went to the studio and saved the day, and he felt alive. So he did it again. And again. Dozens of times. Decades later, he’s still doing it. I love that!Lesson 9: Build a body of workThis is what makes a person an artist. Not a single hit. Not going viral. Not people recognizing you at a conference or a coffee shop. It is the act of making things. Every single day. It’s no surprise that I think you should build a body of work. That’s why I named my podcast The Portfolio Life. The creative life is one of multiple projects and gigs and crafts that all fit together. The fun part about a portfolio is that no two portfolios lo ok the same. That is, if it is made up of more than one thing, if it is diverse. The chances of you becoming famous from a viral hit are slim. But even if it does happen, that’s not enough. Not enough to keep earning a living. Not enough to get you out of bed in the morning. Not enough to keep you fulfilled and alive.Constantly creating new work, however, is. Some of the work will fail. Some of it will succeed. But if you keep making things, you win. That’s the goal.Don’t look at your work as a series of individual pieces that either “go big” or flop. Instead, look at it as a body of work.Your magnum opus doesn’t have to be a single creation. It can be many creations that when all pieced together say something unique that the world has never before heard.Stop chasing fame. Start building a body of work.Need help figuring out what kind of portfolio you should be creating?  Check out Michael Hyatt’s 5 Days to Your Best Year Ever, which will help you set specific goals for e ach area of your life. It’s great. I highly recommend it.This article first appeared on Goins, Writer. You can listen to the audio version of this lesson here.

How to become a Renaissance leader in todays business world

How to become a Renaissance leader in today’s business world How to become a Renaissance leader in today’s business world “Jack of all trades, master of none” is a common maxim for leaders spread thin by their interests. “Focus or fail” is the prevailing career advice, and leaders are repeatedly told that specialization is key to success. But is there another way to succeed? The Renaissance Leader’s World Let’s outline the world today. 1. Globalization:  Once a revolutionary concept, globalization is now widely accepted. Increased global outlooks and the velocity of international exchange present a landscape in which modern leaders grow and thrive. The interconnected world expands boundaries and the generation raised in it fervently applies globalization to daily living. 2. Technology Platforms:  Three emerging technology platforms embolden a multifaceted world of leadership: Learning platforms  rapidly train leaders about a skillset or issue (e.g., MOOCs such as Duolingo and Codeacademy, and  online accreditation programs). “Doing” platforms  broadly advance investment, execution or management of ideas (e.g., crowdsourcing platforms such as Kickstarter and Quora, and management platforms such as Basecamp and Asana). Sharing platforms  bolster information exchange, feedback loops and competition (e.g., social media, websites and blogs). Collectively, these three platforms dramatically reduce the transaction costs of making an impact. These platforms make it possible for renaissance leaders to grow diverse skillsets and accomplish great feats quickly, effectively and sometimes even simultaneously. 3. Flexible Business Models:  An emergence of flexible business models systemize nurturing environments. For example, forward-thinking companies institute work-life balance policies designed for family life as well as the pursuit of personal passions or interests. Automation and additive manufacturing are more sophisticated examples of flexible business models that reduce the time workers need to accomplish traditional tasks, providing more time to spend on other pursuits. In short, across workforce and business processes, emerging business models empower leaders to have their cake and eat it, too. Human potential has reached unprecedented levels. The combination of globalization, technology platforms and flexible career models enables the growth of multifaceted leaders. Meet the Renaissance Leader A renaissance leader is someone who has profound, diverse expertise and channels those abilities for purpose, problem-solving and unifying others. Unlike a polymath or multipotentialite, a renaissance leader is driven by causes beyond themselves. There are three criteria for being a renaissance leader: Diverse field expertise:  He or she has more than broad interests or superficial involvement in several fields. Rather, the individual possesses a profound knowledge, proficiency or expertise in various fields. Channeled fields:  Renaissance leaders are masters at channeling various fields to accomplish focused objectives or to solve targeted problems. In other words, renaissance leaders combine learning from industries that other people may not view as complementary  and use those learnings to address specific challenges. Unifier:  Renaissance leaders are unique because they harness shared experiences by working with and unifying people from diverse backgrounds. Renaissance leaders inspire diverse peoples to take action. Why Renaissance Leaders Matter While human potential is higher than ever, the world’s advancements present us with ever more complex problems. Painful gaps exist within communities and societies that have serious social implications. Renaissance leaders are valuable and increasingly vital on both micro and macro levels. Within teams, renaissance leaders are adept at complex problem-solving, unifying people, synthesizing skills, and empathizing with diverse customers, consumers and/or public interests. On a grander scale, renaissance leaders are key integrators of people and communities. When channeled meaningfully, they serve vital roles that heal divides and coalesce fragmentations, while at the same time pushing forward various fronts. In many countries, renaissance leaders play a vital role when there is strife. They achieve unity in times of polarity by climbing empathy walls, navigating social terrains and creating structures for shared experiences. These audacious challenges require sharp, refined and value-driven leaders. Barriers to Entry Significant challenges, barriers and gaps in business management stand in the way of further developing renaissance leaders. For example, social attitudes toward generalists are subversively negative. In fast-moving businesses, decisions are often made based on specific titles, focused job descriptions and third-party certifications. In the employment market, individuals perceived to be renaissance leaders are frequently tagged as ineffective or undesirable because they lack specialized skills. Even the title of a “renaissance man” is pretentious and often warrants an air of the overly privileged. There are leadership development challenges for advancing the skills of renaissance leaders. Few trainings, career planning programs or leader development tactics are built for people who aim to have diverse skills and experiences. Making Change Improved professional development tools could focus on reframing difficult questions such as, “What do you want to be when you grow up?,” which has one answer, to “How do you imagine spending your time?” Instead of questions like, “What are your goals?” and “What is your career path?” renaissance leaders want to be asked, “What is the legacy you aspire to build and leave for yourself, your family and your world?” More tactically, new forms of project management, time management and investment strategies could be designed with a broader lens for renaissance leaders. Mentorship is lacking for the growing generation of renaissance leaders. While renaissance leaders exist amongst baby boomers and Gen Xers, who might traditionally serve as mentors for emerging leaders, their stories, wisdom and energy persist largely uncaptured. Luckily, an opportunity exists to share the perspective of renaissance leaders, identify a global network and capture learnings and experiences to be shared with the world. This article, which first appeared at  BusinessCollective, is based on the concept of “Renaissance Leaders” developed by  Russ Gong  Ã¢€" Deloitte Consulting LLP, Army National Guard, and Narratale Productions.
